Jack Lowe, a 17-year-old boy who was awarded the title of Honorary Marine in November 2023 for his dedication and service to the Marine Corps, passed away on January 28, 2024, after a long and brave battle with cancer.
A Dream to Become a Marine
Jack Lowe was born in Naval Hospital Twentynine Palms, California, to a military family. His father, Daniel Lowe, is a retired staff sergeant who served in the Marine Corps for 20 years. Lowe grew up with a dream to follow his father’s footsteps and become a Marine himself.
He was a standout swimmer and a good student in high school in Flowery Branch, Georgia. He also had a passion for helping others, especially veterans and their families. He was involved with the Semper Fi Fund, a non-profit organization that provides financial assistance and support to wounded, ill, and injured service members and their loved ones.
A Rare and Aggressive Cancer
In March 2022, Jack Lowe’s life changed drastically when he was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer that mostly affects children and young adults. He underwent 36 proton radiation treatments and in-patient chemotherapy, hoping to beat the disease. In September 2022, he was declared cancer-free and left the hospital.
However, his joy was short-lived, as the cancer returned in August 2023 and spread to his upper body. He tried an experimental chemotherapy, but it did not work. The cancer was resistant to treatment and terminal. Jack decided to stop the painful procedures and spend his remaining time with his family and friends.
Jack Lowe Disease- An Honorary Marine
Despite his illness, Jack Lowe never gave up on his dream to become a Marine. He showed his commitment and loyalty to the Marine Corps values and principles. He also inspired and touched many lives with his courage and resilience.
His dedication and service did not go unnoticed by the Marine Corps leadership, who decided to honor him with the title of Honorary Marine, a rare and prestigious recognition that is given to civilians who have made extraordinary contributions or have a special relationship with the Marine Corps.

On November 1, 2023, Brig. Gen. Walker Field, the commanding general of Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina, visited Jack’s home and presented him with a certificate and a coin that officially made him an Honorary Marine. Lowe was also given a Marine Corps flag, a dress blue uniform, and a challenge coin from the commandant of the Marine Corps, Gen. Eric Smith, who was unable to attend the ceremony due to his own health issues.
Jack Lowe was the 96th person to receive the Honorary Marine title since the program started in 1992. He joined the ranks of other notable Honorary Marines, such as actor Chuck Norris, comedian Bob Hope, and astronaut John Glenn.
A Legacy of Honor
Jack Lowe’s death has left a deep sorrow in the hearts of his family, friends, and fellow Marines. He is survived by his father, Daniel Lowe, his stepmother, Arin Davis, who raised him since he was young, his mother, Jennifer Lowe, his brother, Ryan Lowe, and his sister, Emma Lowe.

He is also remembered by the Marine Corps community, who embraced him as one of their own and praised him for his fighting spirit and his warrior ethos. He was a true example of honor, courage, and commitment, the core values of the Marine Corps.
